Hello. I have a 10 month old cochin bantam cockerel who has recently begun to come into his hormones, and he isn't behaving very well. For some reason he always attempts to mount hens from the front or side, and i've never seen him properly mount a hen, and he's begun to chase them around the coop in an attempt to mate them, today tore quite a few feathers off of one in an attempt.
Would removing him from the main coop into a separate cage for a few days work, or are there any other ways to make a cockerel be better at mating? My current plan is to cage him for a few days.

Young pullets may not submit until point of lay, which makes his job a lot harder if they aren't posing to help him position and balance. An older hen may still refuse him in particular, just because he isn't yet a desirable mate to them (it helps if he dances, shares his treats, acts like a confident boss). In either case, letting him and/or the girls age up and "see but don't touch" may help and will certainly reduce stress for a while. There's a chance he's a dud, but by and far roosters are pretty good at figuring it out so it's unlikely he can't -- he probably just needs practice with WILLING partners.
