I have a 3 month old BLRW cockerel who has always been skittish and fearful of me. Not in a bad way, just doesn’t like to be pet, held, or touched by people. He’s a beautiful boy and has always seemed pretty chill, so I always wish he was more friendly.

Well yesterday for the first time, he jumped up onto the arm of my chair and let me pet him! And just now today, he jumped in my lap, told me some stories, let me pet him, and then jumped back down. Is this a sign of a growing lack of fear with me or a sign he’s mellowing a bit and growing more comfortable with me?

Depends are all your birds pets? Watch him as he grows up and hormones kick in ..
Yeah, I sit with them every day for an hour or two, and they’ve all been hand raised since they were a week old. I also have a very dominant hen that bosses him around and he is very submissive to her. I am definitely wary of new, less fearful behavior haha, so I will be watching him carefully! They’re very much my pets, and don’t even get a lot of free range time unattended because of our dogs and neighborhood.

Just my experience, but entertaining any “confident“ behaviour from a cock bird can be a little dodgy (I have no doubt there are many exceptions, but I prefer to err on the side of caution).
Agreed! It’s both super nice to be able to pet him and makes me super wary as well! So I will be keeping an eye on him. Was curious what others have seen from their boys! Thank you for your feedback!
