I thought that's how they did it in the chicken world. Of course, there may be some rainbow chickens out there, but I'd guess they'd be rare birds!

Is your question about age? I was very surprised to see my 8-week-old buff orp chick trying to mate with another one. I don't think it can possibly be effective at this age, he's not old enough to even be considered a cockerel yet, but he was definitely making all the right moves.
