Hi, A few days ago I noticed that my bantam Cochin was carrying his wing weird. After observing, I realized that there was definitely something wrong with it. It is hanging very low, and looks very much like it is not connected to the body! My guess that it is either broken, or dislocated. I tried bandaging him up, but he kept eventually getting it off and getting all tangled up. Does anyone know what to do in this case, and also if it sounds broken or dislocated? Vet is not really an option, because that would be far too expensive!
If it was broken, would you be able to feel where the bone is broken?

And, how I think this *most likely* happened went like this:
I was holding him, and trying to examine his eye (It was hurt for a awhile, but it is getting better) when he squirmed out of my hands, and flopped on the ground. He has done this a few times, but this was probably the worst he has ever fallen. I was really worried that he might have hurt himself, but he just walked off, so I assumed he was fine. I think it was the next day when I noticed his wing was like that, and that was a few days ago. I don't think he broke it, but I think that he dislocated it.

Anyone know what I should do? Thanks! :)

*Also, I know pictures would come in handy, I will try to get some later!

I have not heard of that website, I will have to try it out!

I hope it's not paralysis. He has not shown any other symptoms so far. His legs and other wing seem to be working fine. :fl

One of our guinea fowl males damaged his wing badly and underneath the bone was poking through and he was really swollen. We cleaned it with saline, treated him with betadyne and polysporin for a couple of days, then sprayed the blue stuff for a few more days. Full grown guineas aren’t SUPER cooperative about medical treatment! Anyhow he seems to be fine now, although I don’t think he can fly. Hope this is helpful!

Ok, thanks! I have not felt any bones sticking through, and I have not seem any swelling, so hopefully it isn't broken.

Also, for an Update, I did put his bandage back on and it seemed to help the smallest bit. I have also been giving him Nutri- Drench, lot's of options of food with protein and vitamins.

Sorry to hear about your cockerel.
You can try splinting it again to see if that helps - here's a manual that may come in handy.

I've found that the easiest way for me to inspect and treat a chicken is to stand them on a table, this way they can't fall and it sort of frees up your hands. Stand him on a table, pull him to you, drape one arm over him capturing him between your forearm and body. Now you have one hand "free" to help control the head and the other arm/hand totally free to use for treating.

I hope it's just sprain and he gets better soon.
