This is a video (and some pics) of my banty frizzle CocoPuff. She is a crazy little bird that was dying to be a mom. She kept sitting on other people's eggs that weren't fertile. She would get up to go to the bathroom and forget where she was sitting and she would move to another box and sit on different eggs. She eventually would lose interest and leave but then a few weeks later, she was doing it again. I finally decided to help her out so I bought six banty babies from Tractor Supply Company about a week ago. I had a plastic bin that I put her in and I put the babies with her. At first she was confused about where they came from. So I stuck one under her and as soon as she felt that, she kicked in to protective mom mode. She sat on them for the next couple of days and then she started to move around. I was afraid to let her in with the big chickens (I have 26 others) because I thought they may peck them. I decided yesterday to let her decide if she wants them out so I opened the door on a bigger cage I had put her in. She started to walk out and they all followed. She clucked and scratched and they all loved it. Then she headed outdoors and she forgot she had babies. She ran away to go get a dust bath and realized she left them. She hauled her little chicken butt right back as soon as she heard them peeping for her. I thought I would try to record her first day so I could remember it. She keeps them close to the run and defends them if others get too close. CocoPuff fended off the speckled sussex hen you notice bothering the chicks at the end (don't worry, no chicks were harmed during this filming). I also gave her a stern talking to and she said she won't bother them anymore. You will notice CocoPuff is molting (she has a bare butt) so she looks even crazier than she is!! I hope you enjoy the short video and the pics!

Aww, what an adorable story!

It sounds like you also got a slight nutcase who is dying to be a mom! Hooray for them.

I have an eleven-year-old silkie mix who is like that (actually sat on non-existent eggs in the laundry room for a year and a half--how's that for dedication?

), and only now she just got some chicks from the feed store. She wasn't even broody, but any chick I stick in with her immediately becomes her baby and she does the mother hen cluck and everything like any other mama who just hatched her own.

CocoaPuff and her chicks are just wonderful--thank you for sharing! This post really made me smile. CocoPuff's bald butt made me laugh, too!

I hope that grows back soon!

Her butt makes me laugh too! Maybe that's why she's sitting down all the time, she can feel a breeze in the back lol. I just let them out again and she was off to another dirt bath. It was so cute to watch because her babies were imitating her and rolling around with her. Some hens came up and pecked at one of them and CocoPuff jumped up and jumped at the hen (a buff orphington named Henrietta). Then CocoPuff took them all back inside the coop. She is an excellent mother so far and I am so happy to see her happy.

Here is another video of CocoPuff. This was her second day out with the chicks. As you can see she is already a pro and she keeps them close.
