so yesterday it was single digit temps and i saw 2 of my anconas shivering. corralled all 6 ducks back into the coop and put in a heat lamp. they stayed in there all day even with the door open, we left the light on and shut the coop over night. this morning they didnt want to come out even with trying to coax them with worms. once i forced them out they went right to the food like they havnt eaten in a day or 2 and they probably havent. my question is are ducks smart enough to realize there is food out side and they can come and go into the coop as wanted? ill give them credit its the first time we have done this.

I don't run heat here unless we get down to -15C overnight. Shivering is the bodies way of heating up. I have straw down in a corner of my Run for my Ducks to huddle into. Plus straw and pine shavings in the house.
My Ducks do fine. Mine are Call Ducks. Yes they are smart enough to know where the food and water is. When it's bad weather they don't move around as much to conserve energy.

i read on here couple days ago that shivering is a sign of hypothermia. thats why i got worried.
