Hello, Everyone!

I'm BarnChickyOO, and I'm a new member! :)
I'm pretty technologically challenged, so please bare with me! ;)

Anyways, my question is....:

Ok- I'll start from the beginning.

I have a hen that is very broody, and , even though it's late in the season, I've decided to let her try and hatch a few.
Sooooooooooo, because I don't have a rooster, I asked a friend to give me some fertilized eggs, so that my hen could try to hatch them.

She said that "the eggs were too cold to be hatched when she got there." I think it was around 40 degrees farenheit ish.
Could this be possible??? I've heard of people storing fertilized eggs in the refridgerator until they had a hen that was ready to sit on them!

So, even though they were cold, if they were fertilized, could they still be hatched???

Thank you for any and all comments! :)

Yes, there's a chance that they can still be hatched. If an egg becomes frozen, it has a lesser chance of hatching, but getting cold shouldn't affect it too much.

Eggs that have been at cold temps can hatch, but have a lower hatch rate and poorer viability.

My friend purchased eggs at trader joes and most of them hatched and they had been refrigerated. Eggs are good for 12 days with out refridgeration. In fact my son lived in Germany and his host mom thought it was wierd to refridgerate eggs. If you think about normal chiken behavior a hen will lay eggs for a few days prior to setting on them for incubation purposes. I don't think you need to worry about the eggs being cold more than the eggs being old. You might find a hatchalong to join to continue posting about eggs. They hatch in 21 days and it is fun to share the experience with others.

Glad you joined us.
