Cold Hardy?

So I've been reading about choosing chickens, and one thing that keeps getting mentioned is choosing for cold hardiness if necessary. My question is... when is that necessary? I'm going to be in NW Virginia. I know it's planting zone 6, but don't know how this translates to animals. Can anyone tell me if northern Virginia winters necessitate having "cold hardy" chickens?

Does it snow often in the winter? If so, you might need cold hardy.
