I live in Northern MN and currently have 1 Silverrudd Blue rooster (almost 1 year old) which suffered a little from frostbite.

My pullets- 3 BCM, 4 Silverrudd Blues, 1 opal legbar, 1 Welsummer and 3 Orpingtons did well.

I hate having any animal suffer so it got me to really look for a cold hardier comb style.

I was interested in Chanteclers but quality birds have been hard to source, so I'm switching to Wyandottes.

but I LOVE my Orpingtons so was interested if I crossed the Wyandottes and Orpingtons to have a bird with a smaller comb and wattles, and beautiful.

What would happen?

I've read the the wyandotte comb should be dominant. Is this correct or is it more trouble than it's worth to cross the two?

Rose combs are dominant, yes.
Most likely the resulting comb would be a "rough" spikier rose comb unlike the smooth Wyandotte comb but it will probably still do okay since a wider comb means less surface area to volume.
