My baby Chicks are almost 2 weeks old. They are in a brooder inside my coop. We've gotten past the pasty butt stage and they are growing, eating, drinking and pooping like there's a gold medal waiting at the end of the day.
My concern is we are scheduled to have single digit temps and I'm concerned the temps might be too cold for them as they don't have all their feathers yet. I have a heat lamp hanging above their coop and they have the brooder they still still snuggle up under.
If I add extra pine straw will that help? Any information you can give me is appreciated.
Their coop is made out of cardboard box in a L shape design. One box is food and water and one is brooder plate the other is freedom or just to peck at the shavings or get away from the heat. If I cover the top of the brooder box a little to help hold the heat in would that help? Just want to give them a fighting chance until they get all their feathers.

Can you post pictures of your set-up?

I didn't get one of the boxes. I've posted previously but delete them off my phone. Will take another one tomorrow. They are like a L. Feed water in short side. Brooder plate box. Then free box. It has a heat lamp over it. I haven't been using as its been warm here and they've stayed under brooder plate unless earing but this week they've been in every room.

Here's pictures.
When you wrote that the chicks were in a brooder in the coop, I erroneously thought you were brooding them with your adult flock. I would brood them directly in the coop.

Remove the boxes and turn one on it's side and tuck it into a corner of the coop. Bed down the coop and put bedding inside the box and put the brooder plate inside it and toss a towel over it to help trap heat. If the temp dips below 20, aim the heat lamp across the front of the box but not into the box. Turn the heat lamp off when the temp goes back up over 20. They should be fine that way.

Well my chicks have survived the 1°temps with fuzz and feathers but they are growing and getting more feathers and I can't wait to see how pretty they look when they are fully feathered.
Isn't is amazing how they can survive those temps? I've had people ask me about a heat source for mine, I live in central Florida, and have had 27 degrees! I tell them that my flock is made up of adults and that the heat is more intolerable than the 'freezing' cold.

My girls are now 15wks old this Monday. I finally have opened up their nesting boxes and one of the barred rocks were already checking them out. They are so fun to watch, hold and be around. We've had several discussions about pooping on the paper and not EVERYWHERE but they just look at me and silently laugh. I did their roost like stadium seating instead of all on one level but they all go to the top board to sleep. I guess they all are the alpha chicken. It won't be long and I will be collecting eggs. :)
