Colder weather

Try looking into heated dog bowls or heated poultry waterer. We use the plastic heated 3 gallon waterer, works great and serves as second waterer in summer.

I've friends in Vail CO, the lowest temp they've seen this year is -4 F. I believe the poster was saying 29 degrees below freezing, which is 3 F. Here in North NH our birds braved -20 F last year, heated waterer had slight skim of ice. They are not active those super cold days but then no living thing is. Birds don't fly if they don't have to when -10 and below.

I use the heated dog bowl in my coop, had the base heater with the metal waterer on top...but at -29*, it was freezing...so the dog bowl has worked GREAT...even at those cold temps..no ice. I live in Colorado also...we compete with Gunnison for coldest in the state, we win a lot! LOL

Thanks all. I can hear you Northerners chuckling and I dont blame you.... temps will get to the 30's tonight and teens tomorrow and I was worried. It is my first year with my hens. I am reassured they will be fine in their coop and thanks again for all of you taking the time to write.

We are supposed to be at 28 in the morning and tomorrow night too. My regular chickens were fine last year down to 17 a couple times but I have since added seramas and o shamos. These worry me a bit. I pulled hay up and over their roosts so they are bedded down in hay. I also put plastic up on most sides of my pens.

Hi there,
frow.gif
Im in Bradenton, just a little south of you.

This is my first winter with chickens, so I too am concerned, not so much the cold, because it wont be too cold, but I was worried coz last week we were enjoying temps in the high 70s and low 80s, and now were going to get freezing temps, Im hopeing the drastic change in temps will not effect them negativley.

I have covered the windows (which usually only have hardware cloth and shutters on) with doubled up sheets so theres no cold drafts, but theres still air flow. Im hopeing that'll be good enough. Im sure they'll cuddle up too
