Coldest night yet - heat lamp for one night?

hey I am one of those canucks and I would love to be having a balmy -10, that is spring weather here, I will admit it has warmed up some 2 nights ago it was -43C with windchill, yesterday -45C with windchill, this am it was -36C but the factoring windchill made it again about -43C it now warmer, only -36C with windchill, Yes that is me trying to be funny and it isn't working.

ohh btw, my chickens are doing fine in their large coop that is not insulated even at this temps, but if a heat lamp makes you feel better by all means go for it. No one can make that decision for you. Its all on personal choice. Mine is on in the coop but no word of a lie its not helping at all. Not real sure why its still on, maybe cause I was too darn lazy or better yet cold to walk across the barn and pull the plug.....I tell my chickens every day, I wish I had feathers like you do!!!

I cook the frozen cracked ones for my hens. I gather my eggs at 7 am without fail but with these temps a couple do freeze, the majority are warm, thanks to a couple hens that take turns keeping them warm until I go get them. mind you I have 21 chickens so I don't mind a couple frozen eggs. Either my birds get them as scrambled eggs or the ravens get them across the field. I don't mind feeding them, they keep my field mice/mole situation down, here at the farm :)

what do frozen combs look like? mine were happy to come out of the coop this morning although supposedly it is -7. it definitely feels colder this morning then it did last night.

I don't see what the difference between using the heat lamps for the really cold days and having a warm day in terms or the girls "getting used to it". I don't typically heat my coop but when the temperatures get below zero (abnormal) I turn on a heatlamp. All winter days are not the same temperature and their bodies are used to some days being warmer than others. The argument of no heatlamp for fear of them getting used to it to me is like arguing not to let them sunbathe on a warmer sunny winter day because all the days won't be sunny and then they will be colder. To me it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

We hit -32 F last night. That's -36 C. Real temp not feals like.

No heat lamp here. The heated waterer can't keep up, had to give them freash water this morn. They are'nt leaving the run area as it's wraped in a tarp for em but are doing well considering it's colder than when they'll be in the freezer.

Hmm. Good point. We had a day or two of near 40 or 50 degrees. A heat lamp definitely doesn't get the coop that warm!

I use a regular 100 watt bulb out there on a timer, mostly for light, but just a bit of heat. On really cold nights I leave it on all night. It doesn't make a huge difference but I figure if they want to snuggle together under it, it'll be a little easier for them. It still got to -5 inside the coop the other night with the light on, but they were able to stay cuddled up together.

From Lebanon NH, where it's sunny only when it is below freezing.

We brought our 7 chickens into the bathroom last night. What a mess today.

This am it is still really cold and we had to separate out the rooster and cage him downstairs: he is so noisy.

I will get even with him later this am, because that is where my piano is!
