Actually, iguanas are strictly vegetarian unless they're starving. Animal protein shuts down their kidneys and they end up living about half as long (less than 10 years vs 20+). NO PROTEIN for iguanas. Kidney failure can take years to show up.

And ours is still a squirly sob but he's coming around

EDIT - I didn't mean to make it sound like you were starving your ig. I'm pretty sure they'll eat about anything put in front of them. What I meant is that they dont "hunt" for insects or small animals in the wild like people think they do. They hunt for mangos!

WOW! That is not the directions we got years ago and I had no idea. We also got this from a reptile specialist/pet shop. Guess they weren't specialists? Ours did live to be 21 years old but we didn't feed her protein the whole time just when she was young.

Sorry to hijack the thread AND to pass on faulty info!

We just freak out on our iggy's diet because we see so many many people with tons if igs that are killing them by feeding them crickets and lettuce and carrots.

And twenty years ago, it was not the problem it is now. Now there are so many iguanas out there they're only $20-$30 and places like PETCO will sell them to anyone and send care sheets home with all kinds of wrong information.

I didn't mean to sound like I was jumping down your throat or anything, we just get very defensive with our iggy.

Okay, woosaah, back to chickies! I think they're easier to feed!
