Y'all, to say I'm having problems with attaching an image is an understatement.
I'm sorry this is so HUGE. Believe it or not, I did actually crop it down.
Anywho - this is Rocky. My husband and I found him huddled in the middle of the road on our way home about three weeks ago now. He had blood coming from his mouth, and we both assumed he probably wouldn't make it through the night. We wanted to give him a quiet place to pass, so we set him up in a box with some straw and offered him some seed and water. Well, little fella surprised us both and has come along quite nicely. Problem is, neither of us have ever had quail, so we're learning as we go. (We named him Rocky because he must've taken a hit to the face in some regard to have the bloody beak.)
He is currently on a diet of layer crumbles, and gets offered some extras a few days per week, too. (Extras like romaine or red/green leaf lettuce, apple bites, blackberry bites, blueberry bites... pretty much what fruit/veggies we have on hand for our rabbits and turtles.) He also has grit available.
I'm reading what I can find about quail, and have come to the conclusion that he isn't going to be happy long-term if it's just him. Am I right about this? I have two Eastern box turtles and a male parakeet that I could possibly house with him (my husband and I are working on an enclosure idea). Would either of these pairings be doable? The turtles were given to us a few years ago, and we had to learn as we went with them. Same for the parakeet. (We should really be able to write some of these guys off on our taxes at this point!) Any info, advice, or tidbits you wanna throw my way will be appreciated!
Ps: I went by a Google search to determine Rocky's sex. It said that the lack of speckles on the chest would indicate a male. Is that correct?
