Collecting water in rain barrels: ok for chickens?

Where I live it's illegal to collect rainwater in cisterns. Has to do with 100+ year old water rights law.

You'll be okay with just a plastic roof. If your roof was asphalt, then I'd say no.

Washing off the roof to remove poo, pollens and other contaminants will be necessary. Also, make sure your container is covered. I have a solid top with a hole and a fine mesh screen over it. Keeps bugs out as well as leaves, etc.

BTW, rainwater is the best for watering flowers and non-edibles. Especially after a thunderstorm. Lots of nitrogen.

I think it would be ok. I do it and my chickens are alive and healthy. Saves me money and that's always a great thing!

Do you put vinegar or bleach to keep the water clean? Thx,
