Collecting water in rain barrels: ok for chickens?

You'll be okay with just a plastic roof. If your roof was asphalt, then I'd say no.
Here's more info if you are interested:

Washing off the roof to remove poo, pollens and other contaminants will be necessary. Also, make sure your container is covered. I have a solid top with a hole and a fine mesh screen over it. Keeps bugs out as well as leaves, etc.

BTW, rainwater is the best for watering flowers and non-edibles. Especially after a thunderstorm. Lots of nitrogen.

I like the idea of a gravity feed system. It would be much easier and I think with a low voltage heater it would stay thawed even in the colder weather. Would have to be mindful of stagnant water in the summers. We have a screen on the top of our existing system for watering plants and it works great. Keeps 'skeeters from laying eggs in it and filters any debris coming off the roof.

I think it would be ok. I do it and my chickens are alive and healthy. Saves me money and that's always a great thing!

Do you put vinegar or bleach to keep the water clean? Thx,
