I think it is cruel, BUT does it warrant a full police investigation or not?? Can it be possible to go overboard in criminalizing the behavior?? Animal cruelty charges can really mess up these kids lives if they get caught. I AM NOT approving, but what happens on chicken farms is as cruel if not more cruel........

that is a horrible thing to do... how would they like for someone to treat them as such... I believe they should be held responible for what they did... so my vote is animal cruelty

I think they should be punished to some degree, maybe community service, but I don't think this is serious enough to put on their permanent record, because they may really suffer for it later on in life. Not a good thing to do to a bird, but not as far as animal cruelty IMHO.

I don't care about their permanent record. Any person who makes such cruddy judgements as a legal adult (18+) is not someone I want teaching my kids or managing my business.

I say, catch the punk kids and shave a stripe in their hair down to the skalp, and color the skin with perminant ink until the chickens moult. Then they can grow their hair back.
If they wear a hat or cover it in any way, press criminal charges for animal cruelty.

Ok....I take back what I said. I didn't read much of the article, but I just did and realized that the birds were harmed. Maybe a couple weeks in jail and probation suits this better.

People have stupid judgement ALL the time and we tend to just let it slide (drunk driving a prime example). The brain does not reach full maturity until sometime in the middle 20's so something like this happening at a College is not surprising.

Should something be done; yes I think so. Keep this on their records? No I do not think so. I agree with the community service, perhaps farm work is in order at the farm the chickens live at so they can see what the chickens have to deal with. I like the shaving their heads as well but the ACLU will never let that happen. Besides we have no idea what state of mind these kids were in when they did this (how much had they had to drink), or was this some kind of frat hazing thing.

Chickenmaven, do you run background checks on everyone you meet and discriminate against people for their past? I take it that you yourself have never done anything that would show poor judgement, so you are allowed to make a statement like that. People make mistakes, it is how we learn; for some it just takes a lot of hitting a brick wall for the lesson to sink in.

So should we prosecute everyone who has ever gone cow tipping?

If I caught someone doing that to my cows, you can bet I would call the sheriff. Bet it would be the last time they entertained themselves by abusing someone's livestock. I personally think when a stupid person's stupid judgments are made public...along with their punishment, it quickly educates the other stupid folks NOT do follow suit.
