Colloidal silver for Preventative use?

I have had a few sick chickens this year (they are doing great now), and I was wondering if I could use colloidal silver for a preventative every now and then for my chickens? Can you use colloidal silver for a preventative, and if so, how much in my chickens 5 gallon water?
