So one of my chicks is big enough I believe to sex. 8 weeks. I am almost certain with what I have seen written here that he is a boy. Chest vertical banding and wings are distinctly banded. Am I right?

I know this guys was considered “mixed” from the breeder (ie chanced at being pied, I know way more now). I assumed he was nothing special in terms of coloring, but I am surprised how light his chest is and the white feathers at his crest. Is that a usual for a straight India Blue?

I can see no white on him to indicate any white genes, you would have to spread his wings for closer inspection. A Dark Pied doesn't have to have any white on them but you could tell from the parents if that was the case. He looks to be a typical Wild Type.

Thanks! I believe it has mixed in the genes so I was not sure if the “blonde” front told anything. Sounds like not. So Wild Type = traditional/who knows?

India Blue with no patterning is Wild Type. IB with the pattern added would be IBBS for Black Shoulder, IB Pied for Pied, IBSP for Silver Pied, etc. Not all splits to colors or patterns are visual but there are normally clues. I see no clues on your chick.

Thanks, I would expect that. The breeder was selling white and “potluck” IB and going for pied so who knows on genetics on the “not pied”. Depending on what happens with my eggs, I will probably be taking a road trip north next spring for some pied chicks.
