Color Patterns for Coturnix: A&Ms and Goldens

I'll have to look tomorrow, I don't think I have any that are 'barred'. Most of mine are either totally blonde or blonde with spots on them, but I'll check and see if any are 'right'.

Shelley, if you don't. I sure do and I owe you.

I think it is so interesting to see how diverse the color variables are. Even when I insist that mine have the Defined Pattern of the bars and stipes I am drawn to your gold by the waterer. So very very pretty.

And I love your bird that was dustbathing and in total oblivian of all that is going on around it.

Having some fun.

Today was their first day out in their run. I had just buried wire around the inside perimeter so there was a layer of nice, loose sandy dirt everywhere. They didn't care what I was doing as long as I didn't interrupt their wallowing.

I don't think there is such a thing as a "right" or "wrong" color with these guys, just personal preference. I've looked at a lot of pictures and seen many quail that look like mine and just as many that don't. It is just hard to narrow them down to a few breeders when I think they are all good-looking. My goal is healthy birds that I like to look at. Without an Official Quail Standard from the United Association of Quail Addicts of the World, I could call my quail Golden Speckled Manchurian Italian Pamela Anderson Blonde Barred Pooping Dirt Peckers and all anyone else can do about it is laugh at me.

I went out last night and, at five weeks old, someone had already laid an egg of respectable size. Pretty and industrious!
