if you wanted to develop a color pattern that does not exist(for example zebra stripes) how would you start?
do you start with a solid color bird and breed a patterned
colored bird to it?
There are no genes that would produce a zebra like pattern. I do not want to be a bummer but you have to have the genes first. A red white and blue chicken would be interesting. Would you be interested in that?
One thing you may try is a color pattern that doesn't exist on a breed here in the US. Britain has many color varieties, especially in the Wyandottes and the Orpingtons, that don't exist here. Check out feathersite.com for some examples of awesome colorings on birds. If you settle on a project like that, there are many people here who are very helpful with chicken genetics.
well, the zebra pattern was just for example. i actually saw a tiger pattern(red and white like on pyles) on a pigeon that was absolutely stunning. the bird is on the feathersite- but every wing feather alternates white ,red, white, red.would that not make an awesome looking chicken? you honestly need to take a gander(pardon the pun)at that pigeon.could you imagine a longtail w/ feathers like that? any one have any more ideas?
