My cuckoo marans had a chick by my white showgirl roo. The chick is solid black (legs, beak, feathers) After looking at the chicken genetics calculator am I correct in reading that the females are solid black but if it was a male it would be barred?
I was kind of sure that he was recessive since there have been two chicks from him (one passed after pipping internally) and they were both black. My main question then was if the barring pattern then would only show up on the male chicks?
Quote:Yes, the barring pattern would only show-up only in male chicks, because it's passed on the Z chromosome. The parent hen can only pass a W chromosome to female offspring. So, she cannot give the barred gene to female chicks.
