Color?

This baby is a mix, but I was wondering if this was an actual color or pattern? It looks more like barring in real life, but I'm hoping it's not. Also maybe gender? Probably too young though.

*they also have white coverings over their ears.

The rest of it is just black. I can try tomorrow though it hides behind the other's and doesn't like to stay still
