Colorado

I have gotten two calls in two days from people wanting chicks. One in NW North Dakota, the other...who knows. It seems people think I should have chicks always available, and should ship to wherver and whenever. Some people just don't understand about chicken breeding and raising. Grrr.....

I will say, as a buyer, when you find the breed you want to raise, finding a breeder is hard. So, when you do find someone other people reccomend, you tend to go full force hoping for availability. I can't tell you how many empty websites I've come up on, and how many emails I've sent out.
We actually just changed our plans, because I can't find LF Cochins anywhere. But If I found a breeder right now, I wouldn't hesitate to beg a little. :)
I would say you should take it as a compliment...even though they're a little naive.

I personally would not want to ship chicks, especially right now, but if you have local requests and you want me to hatch some for you, I'm still setting eggs. Mainly my own, a few shipped because of awesome deals, and some for people who want their eggs hatched and don't have incubators. And suncatcher gave me some Bantam Cochin eggs that are due to hatch next Wednesday :)

No, the one from ND will probably get some from my recommendation in SD, much closer. the other one now wants "hens" which I might be able to supply after I choose my personal stock for next year;'s breeding. That comes first. I explain that to people...some understand, and some don't. Yes, it could be taken as a compliment, but folks need to understand that we aren't hatcheries. Also, I closed down my breeding pens last week. though most of the Dominique eggs will be fertile, I'm not going to hatch out any more this year, after the current batch is done in 11 days.

I have reached one of my goals today with my chicken coop. I mounted a 230 watt solar panel to the roof. ran the wires to the charge controller and then to two batteries for storage. I hooked up a small 300 watt inverter to the system and then unplugged my coop from the a/c in the house. I now have a stand alone energy self sufficient coop

That has been one of my goals for a while now. I would like to place a grid tie inverter in there also, so that I can send some of the power back to the house. It is working pretty well. I plugged in and turned on everything in the coop that will be in there and The system handled it just fine.
Now to deal with the other 482 projects around here.
I have pipping on the 21 eggs in the incubator as well 9 so far out of the 21 that made it to lock down. my four broodies are on a total of 8 eggs at the moment also. All is good in the world of chicken at the moment. The hunt for the raccoons continues.
