It's entirely too cold out and we got a lot of snow tonight. Instead of trudging out to the coop every hour to check the newly hatched peeps, I put the wireless cam out. Now I can check on them without leaving the house!

Nice! I just ordered some. Hopefully they'll arrive soon. I'm going to put one on the puppies and one on the chickens.

I definitely need a camera set up like that. I gave my babies a chick stick yesterday, today bloody poops?!?

I'm freaking out. So now wtd? I'm thinking clean out the brooder box again and put in new bedding. I took away their heat lamp too, but it's pretty warm in the barn. They are a couple/few months old now. We woke up this morning to a crowing contest. I need it to get warmer to thin my flock out and stock my freezer. When will there be a reprieve?

I'm not THAT brave! I had the FF made from before the freeze, and they only get it when it's warm enough out that it won't freeze solid. Other than that, they get dry mixed feed/grains in the same trough. More spillage, but not much choice. They eat it, but not as voraciously as they do the FF.
Anyway, it's been an adventure so far :yiipchick More to come I'm sure! Your boys are handsome as well... a little color difference from mine I think... Stay warm!

Yes, your BO roo's definetly are darker than ours. Hope their combs and waddles are ok. I already miss the gang on fermented feed. Their coats always looked better on it, their poops smell a lot less and they eat less of it than the dry feed. Oh well, maybe I will ferment inside in a small batch, for days when we can anticipate warmer weather.

Took a few shots out in the snow, sure is pretty right now in North Boulder, stay warm!

I'm getting tired of picking up frozen eggs off the coop floor... Guess it's so cold the pullets just squirt them out wherever they're huddled/standing... 2 more first thing this morning (the BOs). Wish they'd at least use the nest boxes I made for them for that purpose. I have now gotten a couple of eggs from my 7 New Hampshires... Not sure which is the producer. Getting 3-4 a day from my BO's, a couple from the Delaware/White Wyandotte crew (pretty sure its the Delawares producing), and still nothing from the Black Australorps.

Looks like the frost/freeze damage to the roo's combs and wattles may be permanent :-( But it hasn't gotten any worse as of this am. Maybe the combination of triple antibiotic and Vaseline I liberally slathered over them may have helped? I hope so... at least it makes me feel a little better that I tried to help :-\ Turns out there was also just a little damage to the very tips of the combs and wattles on the Delaware roo, the New Hamshire roo and one of the BA roos as well. Nowhere NEAR as bad as the damage to the BOs though. They all got salved up last night.

Glad to hear from everyone and hope you're all making it through this first cold snap well. Weather predicts back into the 40s on Tuesday... sure hope so, will be nice to get home and collects some UN-frozen eggs for a change Will also make the birds a lot more comfy roosting at night. Enjoy the rest of your weekend! Get out and enjoy this sun even though it's still cold... it FEELS warmer

It is a beautiful sunny morning here at 6700' just west of Pikes Peak! Chickens are out and about, after the sun had been up for over an hour..... Was 25 degrees in the coop this morning, YAY, so glad I insulated both my smaller coop, now to get my large coop done. Have some frostbite on combs on the boys, not happy about that, but the smaller coops everyone is doing great, comb wise!

I would never be brave enough to do the heat lamp, no way, no how, or the big bucket of water in the corner, with my luck one of the chickens would fall in it!!!

I know nothing about waterers for bunnies, I would look at this as a dry run for what January and February will be like, so plenty of time to find what will work for them.....

Has anyone had luck with Vaseline on the combs???? I am tempted to try it with my guys with bigger combs.

I'm not getting any eggs. Frozen or otherwise. I don't think my pullets are getting off the roosts. I think I"ll follow their lead and stay snuggled on the sofa and watch the Broncos.

Babies? Bloody poops? I would get them on Corid ASAP if it is truly blood and not some coloring from the feed stick. I don't even know what a chick stick is..... how old are these babies?
Bloody poop is usually coccidosis (sp?)or a bacterial infection.

The babies are 2-3 months old. A chick stick treat thing I put in their brooder box for a couple hours yesterday. Now one of my ayam cemani roos that had crow reduction surgery has what looks to be imapcted crop a month after surgery and is acting funny. OMG I'm trying not to start bawling.

My babies! I'm waiting to hear back from the vet.
