Colorado

Thanks, everyone. I guess having an easy Year One did me no favours in preparing for reality! :) It turned out that it was a pair of huge skunks that got them, so I can go back to liking raccoons (for now) and go to not being a big fan of skunks (for now). However, my dad did notice that it looked like at least one fox has been sneaking around so that might be an issue pretty soon.

I got the small coop Memnoch and Mercury were sleeping in divided up so that one side is for them and the other side is for the remaining younglings. It went well last night since I waited until it was getting dark to move the younger birds in. Fingers crossed for no fighting tonight. They don't have to share for too much longer. I'm hoping that this incident will make it easier for me to get help with finishing up coop setups and securing the pens better.

:hugs sorry for your loss. These things happen in keeping live animals.....don't beat yourself up. We all have had losses, some due to illness and some to predators. Try to learn from it and become stronger rather than knocking yourself down. Sounds like you don't have too much to worry about going forward given your dad's skill set in hunting/trapping. We have raccoon visits all the time, for now they haven't been bothering our birds (our neighbors birds are always out and getting picked off) We have used the cage wire traps and the hand traps. Feel better.

Hope ya'll don't mind if I post a few roo pics :D. They are getting really pretty now and the grey one in particular with his long tail is so handsome. He seems to know it already.....we are leaning towards him more and more as a replacement. He is the OE from @Percheron chick flock that we hatched this spring. He is the alpha of the three, is the friendliest so far (hey, I am no dummy I know that can change, after all he is a roo) and the smartest learned the rat proof feeder first. I have also noticed that he and our BO alpha are working in tandem here and there with warning calls. They will be 5 months on the first of September, only time will tell.

For the first year of their lives I had to go out every evening and herd my ducks up the ramp into their coop. For the last couple weeks I have gone out and they were already in the coop. I think they actually learned from the chickens that they could go in on their own and didn't have to wait for me. Silly birds.

So I had some duck eggs to use up, so we made a quiche last night with them, of course cooked it on our smoker. We made a Quinoa crust, we follow mostly a Paleo diet so we tried something different. We used Zuchinni from the garden, mushrooms, onions and goats/Parmesan cheese. Of course smoking it took it up another notch. It was delish!

Looks yummy. Good use of extra eggs.

I wanted to come by and say hello. I am in Centennial and have my first set of chicks. Getting the coop and run set up the next few weeks but they wont be able to go outside yet. The little one is a mere 2 weeks old, the oldest maybe 4.

I figure the first winter I will have to heat their coop, though I dont plan to forever.

I look forward to reading back through the thread and talking with you all in the future.

I have huge bell peppers for the first time but waiting for them to color in! Tomatoes also still green. Got some nice onions, also a first for me. Broccoli was very prolific but all done now.

My peppers did very well this year. First time ever! Cukes did ok, tomatoes were a bust. Not even enough to can this year. Luckily I still have tons of canned tomatoes from last years crop. But the tomatillos will be a bumper crop. I started those from seed back in March and the first time I have grown them.
