Joe, how hot did it get at your place yesterday? It got to about 97 at my house.

The chicks were in the shade, but were still pretty warm. We keep the dirt under the coop damp, as it stays cooler for them that way. No panting until it gets above 90. They sure love the cool dust baths.

105 with a 105 wind!!! I think the water was vaporizing before it hit the watering dishes!!!
And yes the girls were panting! I have shade for them but most all went inside the coops. My "A" frame coops have sub-floors with cracks over dirt. This helps to keep the floors cooler. I will try the damp-under-coop idea! Anything to help the gals out!

I have just looked up some threads on keeping your flock cool in this summer heat...maybe we all need to start tossing some new ideas around.

I am OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS!!!!

I am ready to try anything within my power. I have 5 separate coops that have runs a total of 95ft in length. Anybody got anything to suggest?

We noticed after the rain last week that they seemed to hang out in the areas that were still damp, more than the dry ones. The damp ground in the shade stays cooler, and I guess keeps them cooler as well.

Isn't it amazing how much bigger a chicken can look with its feathers all fluffed up and its wings spread out!

I may spread out the remaining plastic orange barricade fencing over the netting to give them more shade. We don't have trees to give shade. We tried. Out of 125 planted over the past 6 years, (this included seedlings) only about 20 are still alive.
