Waddle Feed Swap? What is this?

Thanks everyone for the info! This is such a learning process and i really appreciate the advice

My dh is putting a roof over the upper run 6' x 12' -the coop lets out to this run and we will leave the lower run uncovered another 6' x 12' - accessed from the upper coop They get to go out to the lawn for a few hours a day(portable fencing where we put our chairs so we can hold them and just sit :D

Just went and checked on them and midnight (rooster) and 2 of our hens were perched -- yeah. I will block off the nests tomorrow (thanks!). How wide are your perches - mine are 2x2x5 and am thinking they should be wider for their feet??

Sorry to be such a pain.

Oh we're all pains here, don't worry about it

My roosts are 2x2 as well but I'm planning on putting in a 2x4 roost before winter as I've read the wider roosts help prevent frostbite. The wide roost keeps their toes covered by feathers when they sleep since their feet are more flat than curled around. It sounds like you have a nice setup for them!

I would also like to know about this swap, not that I need another dang chicken, but it would be nice to window shop (or at least that's what I'll tell the man of the house)!

One thing on the amount of hens you have - Colorado Springs has a minimum coop size of four square feet per bird. So with your 5x5 coop you could "legally" have six chickens. Not that anyone is going to come out and check, but if you get a grumpy neighbor and they call animal services out to take a look you could get in trouble. PS I count my nest boxes for this square footage ;)

In other news, I finally got my nipple watering setup put together the RIGHT way this time, and between yesterday and today I've seen them all drink out of it. Even our slow welsummer finally got it! I'll post some pictures in the next day or two since its too dark to take any now. Finally free from the tyranny of poopy water!

That's how I feel about it as well. We switched to all-flock a couple weeks ago. Their run is already just dirt and rocks (and a million feathers) so if they are hungry they will have the pellets. My girls actually seem to like the pellets a lot more than the crumbles and the little clacking beak-on-pellet sounds crack me up. Somewhere on this forum I read that "You will never see a starving chicken next to a bowl full of food it doesn't like."
Yay! Maybe the younger ones are watching to learn how it's done?

I would be the same way, except I have little silkies and we lost one shortly after the feed change for an unknown reason. So, maybe I'm paranoid, but I'll stick to the smaller feed if it means my silkies eat easier.

Really? Do we know what kind?

I'm not sure what kinds they get, and everyone else is right, Big R employees have no idea either. I've heard one girl say, "we don't know what they are, corporate orders them"
When I was in the Fountain store the guy points to a poster of chickens and chicks and says "check the poster, maybe you can figure out what's what." Are you kidding me? And I'm supposed to trust that this one box is only females?
My husband now wants to drag me up to the chick swap, that I shouldn't have told him about last night.
Anyone know of any closer to Peyton? In the Springs, or Pueblo?

Here's a photo of "Shrek" band #11 who is in the "keeper" pen. So far he looks good breeding. Seems to be a nice 11 week old Dominique cockerel. This shot wastaken primarily for the comb shape, but you get the idea.....
