Wait. What exactly is causing the problem with hard boiled eggs? The freshness or the altitude? I'm a little lost.
Well, I have no experience with this as I'm just now starting to get eggs, but from reading the threads, apparently fresh boiled eggs are hard or impossible to peel well. One major thread here is all about boiling eggs and the consensus seems to be drop them in boiling water and boil for 15 minutes (or let them age a week or so as an alternative. The kink in this method for us is that at high altitudes, water boils at a lower temperature (something like 198 vs 212), so even this method doesn't work well here. Thus the cooks among us can't make a pretty deviled egg, lol.

I've been working on the hard boiled egg thing for awhile. So far my best trick is poking a little hole in the big end of the egg. (I use a paperclip end). Boil water, add a couple pinches of baking soda, boil 17 min (I'm in Durango, works at my altitude), then ice bath. Usually works pretty slick. Good luck.

I have never heard of adding baking soda, I'll have to try this. And I was going to extend the time, so I'll start at 17 minutes since you've already tested that. Thanks!

the farmers market in fort collins.
They said alot of varieties are coming in 3 wks early due to the heat.
I got 20 lbs of organic, red haven peaches for $10!

When and where exactly is this farmers market? I've been to the two in Loveland and I've NOT been impressed.

Hi All
Here I am again... we got our four hens on Saturday. Panda Bear (Ancona) is missing quite a few feathers... is actually bald on her wings. They are all 8 weeks old so she can't be molting. She also had a diaherea this evening. I was thinking I should take them all in to the vet but my vet doesn't seem to do "chickens". Am I over reacting, could it just be the change in habitat and food? Vet recommendations or next steps?
Thanks... Tracie

The feathers could be pecking, and if what I've read is right it could be a mini molt. I've read chicks do a couple of mini molts before they're done growing feathers. The poo could be normal. This site is gross, but it helped me as a new chicken mommy. http://chat.allotment.org.uk/index.php?topic=17568.0

Tracie- if you do end up needing the vet, Dublin Animal Hospital specializes in birds and at least one of the vets is a chicken keeper too. $45 per bird for a checkup if I remember right. They can discount if you bring in more than two, you just have to call ahead and ask.
