They are feeling a little better but I think it's coryza
sad.png

They are sneezing, eyes swollen and oozing, nose is running and they don't smell very good.
Kids and I are devistated.... I will take them to the vet on Monday.
Recommendations? I have read cull them. Others say treat but then they will give it to any new chicks or I will have to keep vaccinating all of them?
Fortunately, I kept them away from my bigger girls (they are 12 weeks old).
Would love to hear from you... What would you do?

I am sorry your birds are still sick!

As far as what to do, that is a tough one. If the vet confirms that it is infectious coryza, then you can make that decision based on what your plans are for your flocks. Backyard only, 4-H, Breeders, etc. You will always need to be aware of being carriers to other flocks and such. Let's hope for the best at the vets.

Welcome!! I have three RIR and I love them. They are great fun, can't wait for those eggs!! I live in a small town and have a small back yard. I was so glad my town allowed me to have chickens!! Everyone should have some!!!! lol There are a great bunch of people here, very helpful and friendly!! Jackie

I'm starting to think a lot of those baby chicks were EEs....and I want one. Lol. It's the last of my egg basket. And my husband is no help. He's deploying next month and knows anything he buys now is my problem, so of course he says "you can get four or five if you want"
I'm thinking.....

Try Denagard for IC. It doesn't cure it but it does get rid of the symptoms and they feel so much better. You can order it from QC Supply. Put it in their water.
As far as culling. That's your choice. If you're not planning on selling or giving your birds to others and are keeping a closed flock then you'll be fine. That's what I chose to do. I couldn't possibly kill all my birds. Just couldn't. This is why we all need to be careful on the birds that we bring in from the swaps and elsewhere. Don't feel guilty either way on your decision.

And the good thing about Denagard is there is NO egg withdrawal time.

Ahhh, so sorry to hear. I'd wait until you get them to the vet before you decide what to do. If its coryza, your healthyy birds could be carriers and any baby chicks introduced could have issues. It might not matter too much if you have kept them apart because just by walking into their coop area after handling the others, you can bring the bacteria into them. It's very, very, very hard to keep biosecurity in backyard flocks.

Just wait until the vet can tell you. Don't stress too much until you know. Where did you get your older gals?

We raised our rooster from an egg (waiting for a crow to verify he is a he ;) ). He is 12 weeks.
We got our older girls from a farm in monument. They too our 12 weeks. We have had them 3 weeks.
Finally our babies are the ones that are sick 2 of the 4 have swollen eyes, 3 have runny nose and all 4 are sneezy. They are 6/7 weeks old. We have had them two weeks. We got them from a farm south of Pueblo.
Am looking forward to seeing the vet (wonder how much that is going to cost)?
YOu guys recommended Dublin Vet but I also see that Pikes Peak vet on union says they do chickens. Has anyone used them? Does anyone have idea on prices at either for the check, antibiotics, and then vaccine for everybody?
Thanks all!!!
Tracie
