Who knew getting an AC unit for the house would be soooo expensive? I'm ready to give up and say, "eh, it's almost winter anyways" my husband says we need to get it now. Like the worst part of him deploying is my lack of cold air? Lol. Anyways...owning a home is stressful, although you couldn't pay me to move back onto a base.
Any suggestions? Thoughts? Bits of wisdom?

We just have a small one for the bedroom for sleepin...enough for us. If its super hot we might turn it on during the day and retreat to the bedroom.

Always see them for sale on CL.

Home Depot has some swamp coolers, they are only good for and enclosed area but my parents-in-laws put there in the basement and set up a living room down there and for really hot nights they had an extra bed down there too. They also had a few window units to help keep the upstairs cool. They made a wall out of a curtain to keep it up stairs. They just gave in and got air conditioning this year though.

Yeah, we have a few window units that work best with the rooms door closed. But they don't help for the front room, and the unit in the living room has to be on constantly to help.
Had a swamp cooler in New Mexico, quite useless if there's even 5% humidity.

When we built our home, we did not have an air conditioner for the first few years. I installed a whole-house fan while the house was being built, it made life bareable. We ran it at night to exhaust the hot air from the attic and draw the cool evening air into the house. It worked well when it was a hot day followed by a cool night. There was always a few hours of unpleasantness towards the end of a hot day, and you had to really regulate entering and leaving the house to better control how quickly the house heated up during the day.

If you have allergies, then there is a penalty though.

When we got a central air conditoning system, my wife's first comment was, "Why did we wait so long?"

Sadly they tried about everything and that was the best they could find. Black out curtains help keep the cool in but still don't help that much either.

Chicks are okay - no coryza! Upper respitory infection. They are all on antibiotics and nose/ eye drops. Went to Dublin Animal Hospital. They were very nice. He said that chiks with Coryza stop eating, and just want to lay around and the mucus is really thick. Whew!

Thanks everybody for the wonderful advice. :D :D
