It was so nice of you to take the roo. Not many people are able to help out a chicken at a rescue organization. I hope you can either keep it or find the owner.
Anyone here in CO have any turkey poults they want to sell? I've ended up with one of almost every breed you can imagine and no breeding pairs except my beloved Bourbons. Specifically, I'm looking for Midgets, Hollands, Blacks or Bronzes.
Thanks
I have to admit that I'm very new to the whole chicken thing and now to minimally processed food, organic... all that stuff. So I probably wouldn't know good food if it bit me, but...
I was actually fairly impressed with his whole set up. He processes grain products for human consumption and the stuff he is selling as feed is the by-product, if you will, from the processing. It's 100% grain, ok beans were added to this batch, but no binders, preservatives or any of that other stuff. Every batch will be different, it just depends on what he happens to be processing at the time. This particular batch has:
I purchased 90 lbs of the conventional type for $10.80, it filled just over 1/2 of a 30 gal trash can.
You do need to bring your own container, or purchase a 50 gal (smallest he has) barrel. You take it in to his facility, He puts it on the scale then picks up his hopper with a forklift to fill your container.
If this is something any of you think you are interested in and maybe don't have the ability/time to make a trip up here with a large container, I/hubby may be able to provide delivery. I'm still working on what it would cost us to deliver, but I think even for the organic we could do it for at or below .50/lb
Let me know if this sounds like a something you may be interested in. Or if you have any more questions - this post was getting a little long to put in all the details.
If you look at the cleaned pic where you can see what is actually in the mix, I noticed three different types of beans. The larger white (Navy?) bean is actually split in half.
I fed some to the chickens last night and didn't see any signs that it was even out there when I checked this morning.
I fed again this morning both to the 4 month olds and to the 2 month olds and they all went crazy for it. With this particular mix, I'm comfortable increasing it until I'm feeding it solely. My chickens do get access to free range part of the day so that helps to augment for missing nutrients. I may want to get a vitamin supplement just to ensure they are getting a fully balanced diet, but beyond that, so far I'm really liking this mix of grain and beans.
Rockpile, thanks for the info. I have a friend who was going to get organic grains from somewhere up north. I wonder if this is the same place she gets hers from. From the looks of it 1000 lbs. of feed would only cost $120 from where she gets it from. (Hope that all made sense.

I have another ? for everyone. My daughters gold laced cochin was injured recently. We may have to cul her, but I'm trying to find a replacement for her. Does anyone locally breed standard gold laced cochin?
