Well, finally back from CA, and now catching up.
Minchi, so sorry to hear of the layoff. Hoping you find a long term job that you love soon.
Sorry about not having the names, but there were a few new people, and lots of posts, and I'm old and I forget the names........but welcome to all the new people.
There was a newbie asking about chicks in January. I didn't get mine in Jan, but my March 2 chicks were day old and went into the coop the day I got them. Kept them confined in a wire brooder with a heat lamp on top at first and they were just fine even in the cold weather. I swear I will NEVER raise chicks in my house, but then ten years ago I'd have sworn I'd never have chickens, who knows. Just be sure you build your coop bigger than you think you need it. For several reasons, chicken math being one. Also, while technically (by the 4 sq ft per chicken rule), my coop is large enough for 20, I would never put that many in it. Other things you put in it take up room, and the birds need room to keep the peace.
I came back to find that one of my birds looks sickly, all puffy and hugging the ground, while still walking around. Her crop is a hard mass, so I'm suspecting impacted crop, and have been reading a little to try to find out what to do about it. Have no idea how long she's had it, as my neighbor, while he was nice enough to watch them, isn't observant enough to have even noticed the changes in her.
Says that of my 6 definite layers, has still only been getting an egg or two a day. Hopefully by next spring things will pick up. SIGH, and STILL no blue or green egg out of my EE.
Anyway, glad to be back among people that don't think I'm crazy for having chickens pop into my conversation occasionally.
Oh yeah, took a couple of pics of this great looking turkey I saw at a tourist trap on the highway in CA. Someone mentioned a 'bronze' turkey earlier on. I asked what kind this was and the people that had them didn't know, but Bronze adequately describes them. Will try to post the pics later today after I get the car unpacked.
