Colorado

I miss not being able to free range them more on the rest of my property. They have probably close to 2000sq.ft now to roam that is enclosed but the really good weeds are out of the run area. I'm hoping that I can enclose another half acre or so this spring where I can just let them go forage to their hearts content. A couple years ago, I spent so little on feed that I was worried they weren't eating enough. Gosh, I miss those days.

I got my NPIP number yesterday in the mail. Is it just the CO followed by 3 digits? I can't remember exactly now what my number is but something like CO-122. Somehow I was expecting a bigger number.

Yep that's right - got mine just a couple of days ago, and it's CO-120.

Have new neighbors restricted your range area? Or predators? 2000 sf is still plenty of room, but I understand what you're saying, the more the better. Can you use one of those movable electric netting setups to let them range elsewhere for a day or two at a time? They don't have tops, of course.

My only concern here is if they decide to really roam - they would have to go 1000 feet to get to the frontage road, which I suppose is possible, but probably not likely. If the property next to us is sold to someone who has dogs or doesn't like chickens, I could be looking at either a really expensive fence, or a larger enclosure for foraging, as you have had to do. If I could afford it, I'd just buy it myself, would give us 60 acres and no neighbors for a couple of miles North or South. West is cow pasture, and East is the frontage road 1000 feet away. Alas, that is not in the budget at this time :)

We built our run only for when foraging wasn't going to work, which is a day by day decision. Its 900sq ft, and gives them plenty of room, since we only have the 12 LF and 2 silkies. Even with all that room I also don't like keeping them "cooped up" in there. And I noticed they don't either. Our back door is pretty far from the barn and run, but when they hear that door open, they all run to the run door and wait to be let out. I love the look of all the chickens roaming the back yard.
To entertain my FiL I'll call the chickens from the back door, and he enjoys watching them all run to see what I have. My Cochin boys are just too funny, with their puffy pants and butts.

Who has fertile quail eggs? I'm looking for some to hatch:). I could trade a rabbit doe...or pick of the litter when we breed for meat...chicks. kombucha starter. Sour dough starter. Amish friendship bread starter. Or cash ;)

Nobody at my place checked the mail in the last two days. I don't even know where the mail box key is..... One of the kids has it I think.
