Colorado

Thanks for that post Smoky. I for one don't foresee myself showing any birds. Only because I have no clue. But seriously considering joining the CPA. I suppose if I get more involved and more informed, showing might not seem so far fetched for me. I just need to see what is involved. My younger daughter might enjoy this also.

Showing can definitely be fun if you have the time to do it. A lot of the fun is just hanging out with other poultry people and talking about birds. If you have never shown, I think it is a great experience. I did it for several years when I was younger. Come to think of it though, I only have a couple APA varieties right now anyway (not that they couldn't be shown in the "other" division).

Smoky- Is someone from your club selling feed? I remember someone mentioning to me that someone involved in one of the clubs was selling feeds.

Hey Colorado people! It looks like this board has been a little slow! I live in the suburbs and would love to chat it up with others from my state! Anyone else go the NWSS recently??

Congrats on the Win!!! What class was that for? Was that Best in Show, too? We went yesterday, so sad that they didn't let the good show birds stay for the duration this year. Were any of the sale birds there yours? I saw a couple of stunning white Cochin trios. Have any idea how many birds in total were shown?

Hey there Coopa Cabana!

There were about 300 birds shown this year. My Black Naked Neck pullet, Elvira, won Champion of her class Any Other Standard Breed. It was very exciting because she is just a backyard chicken and we beat out 27 other chickens for the win! Best in show went to a professional breeder (of course).

I did visit the sale birds a couple of days ago, and there were a few nice birds, but NOTHING like the quality that were there on show day. You should check out my post about the show: hopefully the link works. It's called "just bragging" under "Pictures and stories of my chickens."

How many birds do you keep?

Thanx for the link - That's truly an inspiring story for all of us who just have a small backyard flock, and having considered showing at one time or another. Did the NWSS requiring any testing or certifications before you could show? 300 certainly is a healthy turnout - if I'd known in advance that the birds weren't being held over for the duration this year, I would have tried to go last weekend. Your little Elvira is a pullet? Shows you how much(very little!!) I know about Turkens - I would have sworn she was a roo! Congrats Again!

Most shows will do a veterinarian check for parasites on the show site, and they did swabbing for bird flu at NWSS. Other than that, there were no special papers needed. I just registered for the show by the deadline. A fun show you might consider entering is the Rocky Mountain Feather Fanciers show in the fall. I'm on their email list, I'll see if I can dig up the email address for you. It was very low key (well, most of us were) and very educational! I wish I had a camera to capture the expressions on peoples faces when they first looked at my Turkens - priceless!!

What kind of chickens do you keep?
