I pulled my son out of school. He is 15, an active member of Arapahoe Rescue Patrol, a leader. There was a threat against his school yesterday for today, which freaked me out. He is that kid who would take point in getting other kids out, putting himself in harm's way. While I'm proud, I'm terrified. My other two older sons are in the Army and one in the Navy. I almost feel they are safer, they have guns, body armor and are trained. If they were to be in harm's way, they know it, they signed up for it and are trained for it. My 15 yr old should be passing notes (or texting), grouching about homework, and thinking about girls, NOT dodging bullets.

Looks like it is possible this newes shooter knew someone at the school, as you have to be "buzzed" in, so no just walking into the school. Some are reporting his mother may have been a teacher there. Just sad and senseless........

I am being called out by "friends" and family on Facebook because I am of the stance, KEEP THE GUNS LEGAL otherwise only OUTLAWS will have guns, and who will keep your family safe when your home is invaded or your car is jacked? Please, you know, these same bleeding hearts will be banging down my door is there really IS the end of the world, all of the sudden my "crazy" canning, having chickens, bees and baking my own breads etc... won't seem so nutty. Oh, and the fact that I'll have a couple guns to back up my position so someone doesn't come in and kill us for our food and water.... yeah. I bet the people who are screaming for banning guns will be the first ones looting Dick's sporting goods for a rifle....
I apologize for my rant.... It makes me mad.

I suspect there is no gun debate here as most of us have had to deal with predators trying to eat our horses or chickens. I keep a bb gun for critters that aren't a threat... ground squirrels are the worst around here. A bb gun doesn't have enough impact to kill them but it just enough to get them out of my chicken area. I do have other personal protective equipment just in case a bigger predator should come. I worry all the time about predators wiping out my whole flock because it has happened way too often to people around me. It is dangerous to try to get even a raccoon off your chickens with a broom or long stick because it puts you in arms length of it and the critter has rabies, it could infect you. It is because of the reality we deal with all the time that a gun debate is not here. One person was voicing her concerns because I suspect, she, like the rest of us, are upset. We all have kids and all remember when our babies were 5. My little girl is 6 and the idea that some crazy person could do that, is just disheartening.

My chickens and my dogs have no one to defend them against predators like coyotes. I must be that defense and if I have to take out, with great remorse, even someone's dog to keep my flock safe, I will. They are my responsibility to keep safe and a broom just isn't a match against a wild animal.

No, you were talking about the real ones that attack innocent children when they are safe in their coops at school. We, on here, deal with life and death situations all the time. Culling a sick bird..crying over one that we tried so hard to save and then for some people like me, burying them next to my beloved dogs that have passed. We see life and death everyday from chicken hawks preying upon them to the neighbors dogs sniffing our runs. What happened today in Ct. is horribly sad and I suspect it hurts people like us even more. Why? Because we know that if we don't do what we must to protect our animals, that something will get in there and wipe them out. It could be hawk or a raccoon or even a cute, little poodle from next door. It's not an if but always a when. So we are proactive and when a dog gets in to our coop and takes one of ours out, we don't blame the dog- we blame ourselves for allowing it to happen and not anticipating the wildness of animals and things. It's part of everyday life for us because we are responsible for the critters in our care. Read any animal husbandry book and there will always be chapter upon chapter upon chapter of keeping our critters safe, what to look for, how to dispose of the carcasses of the critters we've had to kill safely so as to not bring in other critters...

today should not be about gun control. if it is, there is something seriously partisan about the world vision of whomever it is that sees it that way. gun control is a non-starter for us that live amongst wild animals and the occasional insane person who might want to break into our house and harm us. I suspect I give more thought to the safety of my chickens than many people do to the safety of their children when they send them to school. The reason is that I know that there are bad things in this world, whether it is a cute little chicken eating poodle or an insane, drug addled, mentally unstable man. I also know I can put up signs all over my yard warning coyotes not to come in. But they don't read and they don't care anyways...so they will show up occasionally. When they do, I better be prepared. Blaming something might make someone feel good but it will never bring back the things we loved. Believe me, if it could, I'd have a half of a flock left from a neighbors dog.

my point is i suspect much could be learned from talking to a farmer about not only biosecurity but also physical security for the animals in their care.
