I'm getting 25 SS from Tony Albritton in early April, those will be nice quality birds, but I don't expect to be letting any leave until late summer. I have been thinking about getting some pullets from McMurray - had them before from them, and they were pretty good for hatchery birds in terms of appearance, much like the girls I have now from a different hatchery - nosy, friendly, pretty, good foragers, really fun to have around, and the best grasshopper hunters ever If you want to wait for the Albritton birds it will be August or September, but if you just want pullets for the laying/foraging flock and don't need SOP-close, I can add some to the McMurray order. It is my favorite breed, no question, although Leghorns are a close second. The SS have great camouflage and I love their personalities I used to have a roo who would jump into the van when I got home from the grocery store to see what I got LOL

Got a few things done this morning.....
Loaded 12 bags / onw trailer load of the free mulch. Got it all spread out, and found we need at least one more load to gt it all done. That will have to wait until next week.







Then I got some wire fencing up on the upper front sections of the breedong / brooding pens.




We did the sign last weekend.

Coloradogal, such an awesome pic of your eggs! Wendle, I officially have coop envy!!!! As to breeds, I love my black austrolopes, my Americana had a buddy, she was killed by a neighbors dog, so the other girls aren't that nice to her, they don't hurt her, but they case her off when I put out their oatmeal or treats, I usually reserve a few just for her. I am in the city and we are supposed to have 4, but my neighbors are very cool and have agreed that as long as I don't have super noisy Roos they don't care about the chickens. Helps that I have greased the wheels with home grown honey from my hive, and on one side they've had some eggs and are debating getting their own girls! I am for sure adding 3 more girls I may rehome the EE, even though I love her and she is just so pretty, to date she hasn't laid and to be honest she's flighty and skittish. My other girls want to be held, fed out of my hand and are over all lovers. If I had to make room, id go for 3 more Astroloups, we have been getting an egg a day from each of them. Fr me, the main reason I decided to get chickens are eggs. We are going to raise our own Turkeys this year as well, I'm a bit nervous but I'm sure it will work out! I'd like to buy local, but I want broad breasted bronze and am not sure if I can find them here local. As to the slaughter, there is an ongoing debate at our house if I will be able to do it. But I've bartered with a friend who is a hunter for the deed. If I raise them he will process them. Still the debate rages on if I will be able to eat them. We shall see.
Meggio do you raise pork? We are very interested in purchasing or bartering for some pork in the new year.

Hmmmm, well, I am hoping to add some before late summer, so yes, please add four SS for me to your McMurry order, would be great! I too like their ability to blend in, and they do have wonderful personalities. Still may be interested in some late summer, a roo for sure, once you decide who you are keeping and who you are selling from your Tony bunch. I don't dare have any birds with all white, as they seem to be the first to be picked up by whatever comes long. Thanks!

received in the mail today a copy of the 1913 National American Dominique club annual report. What an awesome American Dominique resource! Yes I am partial to Doms! Even 100 years ago, they are making the same kind of statements i have been making. Less feed, great layers, tasty meat, winter laying, etc, etc, etc.....

That is cool that you found a 1913 copy! How many years would you say do Dom hens lay for???? What is the average weight of a Dom hen?

Dominique's, what sort of egg production? They look so pretty. I have the black austrolopes and am hopefully taking 2 rehomed red stars. I love the look of the doms and their eggs are so pretty!!! I feel like someone slipped chicken crack in my food!!!! My hubby and I are waiting on a fat settlement, which would allow us to buy land. I a, excited excited!!!! I can have a bunch of chickens!!!!! Yay

I find it funny that my girls laid 10 eggs thursday 18 eggs yesterday and 10 today. I haven't seen that many blue eggs in a month or two.

I have the same fear - based on the fact the pigeons in the barn have the occasional white flock member that usually only lasts a few weeks. They're just too easy to spot.

I'm sure you saw the discussion on the HLF thread about this, but I was wondering whether you agree that there were at one time Red Doms? The pictures that were there were really pretty, I thought. Made me want to make some LOL
