Colorado

my next residence will be on land, don't mind small and older. I was in banking/mortgages for almost 20 yrs, and I am sure there are some smokin' deals to be had, I don't even HAVE to stay in CO, Washington State has a lot of draw for me. One of my sons is stationed out there, and I love their growing seasons! So humid compared to here. Or even Texas, I can grow grapes there too. but OR or WA are my first choice if not here. I am eyeballing maybe the western slope for grapes, I really want a vineyard as well as a mead. Just want to be where I can do my own thing finish up my book on food and wine and be left alone from the hassle of the city you know?

Hi everyone!

I'm new. I posted an intro on the intro thread space. I'm in CO springs.

Welcome!

I would keep records how long and how cold. How long and how you warm them. Record hatch rate and any interesting trends you see. Then report back to us ?
Sounds like a project for someone with more time on their hands ;) though the data would be interesting. Plus we haven't invested in an incubator just yet. Hey now that I think of it, someone should do a study on how getting an incubator affects chicken math...

Thanks for the info on the Doms W. I really am LOVING this group of such well informed peeps! OMGosh I'm so excited this morning because my sweeties came running up to me and wanted love. Then I opened the nest box and lo and behold 3 eggs, and not just 3 eggs, but one is so big it doesn't even FIT in the egg carrier! WOW I'm posting a pic. Now, while I love the fact that "my pet makes me breakfast" I really just love the daily surprise of eggs or not. Plus, I'm a city girl, always have been (can't wait to change that!) Always with the fake nails done hair, high heels. I could NEVER imagine mucking around on a farm. OMGosh! I love the peace! I can't get enough. I love waking up early to feed the chickens and water the garden etc... like someone said about getting lost in the chickens it's the bees for me. I can watch them for hours! SO peaceful!
I just keep hearing about these amazing breeds and I am so in love with the chickens in general, that I think any breed will be love for me. I'm a bit worried (not today) about how long my girls will lay and at what point do you get new pullets and what in the world do you do with the ladies that are retired? Do you eat them? I don't think I can, or do you humanely put them down? I'm so new at this but I love it so much it brings me so much joy and I know my girls won the chikie lotto when I got them cause I spoil them something terrible! :) I do wish they were nicer to Tini, she still hasn't laid an egg, and is so flighty she runs away from me. :(
Well, I'm just rambling at this point.
Did we figure out Poultry day at the Stock Show? I'd love to meet some of you if you will be there :)

I don't know if this came across the other day but here is Ferb singing her egg song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dql76Nbp2A
Here's my big ol' egg today :)

PS Excuse my unbridled excitement over my chickens. I just can't help it!

Wow, that is HUGE!

I just downloaded the Fields book for Kindle the other day - I don't have a Kindle, but I downloaded the Kindle for PC software, it makes it easy to read, although so far I haven't figured out how to see what page I'm on. I haven't gotten to the part about the Red Doms yet. I thought the same thing about the coloring, but I don't know enough yet about how color and patterns work together to know if there is the possibility of an all red and white/grey bird. If there is it could be an interesting project for down the road - presumably it would take Doms with strong type that breeds true and a red bird (maybe RIR as mentioned on HLF) with a strong pedigree for color but type that is more like a Dom than a RIR, which I guess would amount to a cull for a RIR breeder. I was reading another book that states color is from the male and that chicks will most resemble their paternal grandfather, and that was the first time I had seen that, it was from the Felch book written in 1877, and I'm not sure if there is a line between fact and opinion there.

There is no end to reading, and it makes me wish I had weeks to just read and absorb LOL. No such luck.
I too love to read. Have you heard of any Chicken Magazines that one can order, and they come once a month? I am looking to broaden my chicken knowledge which is very little!
