Thanks for the welcome! I'm really excited! I'm not sure about breeds yet but my 11 year old wants a silkie. I've read they are not great layers but they sure are cute! Any suggestions? I mostly want good layers but I also want friendly hens for my kids sake. Also, do any of you buy your chicks locally or mostly mail order? I'd like to get them locally but I'm not sure where.

Maybe you can put a flyer up at your local feed store? Tell them all about BYC!

I'm getting Wyandotte bantams. They are listed and touted as docile. I dont want my toddler getting pecked.
Check out the "BREED" section. This will let you breakdown breeds by what you are looking for in your chickens.
You can find bird swap meets on here as well as craigslist. I'm getting my pullets from my local Feed & Supply store. This swap is in Denver every 1st Saturday of the month. http://www.denverurbanhomesteading.com
The CO Springs peeps could probably tell you some more resources that are down there.

The feed stores will all have chicks very soon. You can also check out chicken swaps. There is one in Denver this wweekend and one in greeley if I remember right.

The local feed stores should start getting chicks in soon. With in the next month they should be everywhere. Elizabeth country corner has chicks available as soon as tomorrow I believe. They are about 1 hour drive from the springs. Big R should have them available soon as well. There is a feed store in falcon that sells them too. Also there are many breeders right here in this forum that sell chicks. You may want to start there first.

Big R will start selling the second week of Mar. but she couldn't tell me which breeds there are going to get.

They never know the breeds. They get assortments and hang up a big poster of the breeds by chick pictures. Whenever I have asked in the past the has always been 'someone' higher up placed the order and they get what they get. Usually they only know which batch is sexed and which is s/r.

this is where i started out. we got our first flock from them. i am at a tos-up now, i can ether get mystery meet from big R or find someone to buy from. i don't want a flock of all of the same breed but i want to know which breeds we are getting. is there a different store other the Elizabeth county coner store?

You guys, I'm so disappointed! I got my order today of modern game bantams and my 2 black east indie ducks, and only 2 of the 7 bantams have normal legs. The rest all have curled toes and one can't even stand up because it's legs are tucked in and curled. I knew they weren't SQ, but I thought they would at least be "normal"! I have heard nothing but good things about these guys so I'm super bummed. Not to mention the chicks/ducklings were presents for my hubbies birthday. At least the ducklings are good. And the 10 other WARMING MALES are fine, lol. I don't even know the breeds of the warming males. They are like orangy color though.

So disappointed.......
