Colorado

We're they sold as all pullets or straight run? I do know some of the hatcheries are better than others at sexing. Many of the feed stores buy from Pritchett (I think that's how they spell it). Everyone I know that's bought chicks from stores that purchase from Pritchett get at least 1 roo out of every 4 they buy. And they're supposed to be all pullets.
Do you know where Murdocks gets their chicks or Ace Co-op in Brighton by chance? Gosh 1 out of 4 are not very good odds for Pritchett. My GLW has a bit of red in her comb already so I am hoping that she isn't going to turn into a he! I know that it is a possibility since nothing is 100% in the sexing game.

I don't know where Murdochs buys but I know the Big R near me buys from Pritchett. And I know several other feed stores in Southern Colorado buys from them also. I would ask what hatchery they use. And you're right, it's terrible odds. I had a friend that went back and complained about getting a roo when she paid for pullets. They told her its always a gamble.

They were sold as pullets. Do you definitely think the first is a roo?

I might go ahead and call them tomorrow if no one knows this off hand. We were told 95% accuracy and they were all labeled as pullets. I guess we will keep our fingers crossed and hope we luck out and all of our girls stay girls!

Not sure where they get their chicks from but they're great people I think they would take a roo back. I bought chicks from them of various breeds. If I end up with one I may keep it. Not certain yet. If I end up with more then one I can't keep more then one

Welcome to all our new members, and welcome back to Alivian Acres!

The chicken with the sore leg/foot, I would soak in Epsom Salts and warm water in a bucket 30 minutes a day for a week or two and see if there is any improvement. If you feel antibiotics are required, any of the tetracycline type ABs would do, but before that I might try applying some Nustock or triple antibiotic ointment after ES soak and wrap with gauze and Vetwrap - any time you can fix a problem without systemic antibiotics I think you're further ahead. That said, if the foot worsens rapidly in the next day or two, give the antibiotics.

The GLW looks like a cockerel to me - wattles and red comb already? Probably a boy. I've been wrong as often as right, but sure looks male.

DL over varnished wood ... should work, as Wendell said, as long as there are multiple applications, or covered with polyurethane.

Meal Worm farms - have had them > 6 months and finally have some I can feed out. Patience. I have them in plastic bins with Wheat Bran I froze two days (or you can bake) to eliminate any possible mites, give them apple or carrot slices (potatoes always seem to mold before they are eaten) a couple of times a week. DH thinks I am nuts. Just one of my science projects :)

Tonight I collected eggs and got the weirdest egg I have ever seen - it was a very small bantam sized brown egg from a LF layer. I accused Bob of trying to mess with me LOL. I will take pics and show you when I have time Friday (hopefully). Ridiculously busy week. Work is busy and home is busy - but home is busy with chicks and eggs, and I am loving it :) Sadly it means I have not had time to call Mr. Urch about our order yet, hoping tomorrow or Friday. I have been getting home from work well after 5 and thrashing on chores a couple of hours, then trying to read email and this thread and hit the pillows in enough time to get up the next day and start all over again :) I do NOT hate my life, I actually rather like it.
