 is there a fair or chicken swap coming up this weekend????

There is the El Paso county fair in Calhan but I am not sure about their sales policy if you aren't an entry. I will be hanging out at the Falcon Big R tomorrow afternoon to sell the rest of my Silkies, buff Orphingtons and Barred Rocks (I hope). Staking out a feed store in an area where roosters are ok is also a good tactic. Just call ahead to make sure the feed store doesn't have a problem with you being there.

Hello all...

Well I was dreading this. I had read stories and heard my mother tell tales of mean roosters.

It's time for mine to go.

He is 16 weeks old; for the past 3 days now, whenever I go out into the backyard, he waits until my back is turned and then he goes for my legs. I don't know if he thinks I'm an alpha hen or if he is actually trying to attack me.

It doesn't matter though, I can't have it. I have my small grandchildren that play outside and I don't want them getting hurt.

It's upsetting in a way, I incubated and hatched this guy. I've fed him and watched him grow. He used to be very gentle,sit on my lap and let me pet him. Now I try and pet him he bites my arm. Two days ago he bit my leg. Then today when my back was turned as I was checking on my tomato plants, he went for my leg. *Deep sigh*

Someone please tell me how I can cull him humanly. I read something about using a Soda Stream? Then there's the old chopping block.
I could also take him to a meat market but that would cost me too much.

I don't think I'll be able to do this alone either, since he has gone after me now, I'll need someone to help me catch him and maybe hold him down. Ugh.

Get an box knife or a hunting filet knife. Cut deeper and harder than you think you will need to the first couple of times. It is better to cut their heads off than not cut deep enough. After you do the first one or two you will be able to cut deep enough until you sever the vein and not the wind pipe. It's better to have them dead the first time than to make a perfect cut IMO.
Plucking is easy, or should be if you get the temp right. I find 165F to 170F is best. The books say lower but I think our altitude needs a higher temp. If I see steam and the water isn't boiling that is about right.

Exactly!!! If your knife won't slice "through a shoe" without blinking, then it isn't sharp enough. Get the razor blades as a back-up just in case.
And I always say "Thank you". I figure, the bird is dying and giving me food, so I should be respectful to it.

First off, please do not beat yourself up over this. You did nothing wrong to make him mean, he is a chicken! Chickens get ahead in this world by staking out territory and defending it and mating with as many hens as possible, etc.
Some wind up being nice and others, not so nice, just like people...... LOL!!!! But he is still a chicken....

Not a good situation. I would help but I'm totally booked today after work and the rest of the weekend. Between car repairs, home projects, and a promise to help a neighbor with his fence, I just don't have the time.

If you want to process him to eat, I posted how we do it a page or so ago on this thread. Others have various other methods that work well too.

Last week Abe thought Hannah was disturbing one of "his" hens. He went after her. Mind you, Hannah is fully capable of taking out a rooster.....Well, she drop kicked him about 15 feet, and when he came at her again, she grabbed a stick and started yelling and chasing him all over the chicken yard. Now when she walks in he stays about 15 feet away from her.....

Pozees is coming over to process hers, and help me with mine (it's my first time) this weekend. If you don't mind driving to Pueblo West, you can join us. Not promising the best facilities or anything, as again, I am new to this....

We will be using cones. From the demo Wendell did, it all seemed very humane and respectful.

When are you doing this and where are you? I am in Colorado Springs (basically) and could make the drive; how are you transporting your chicken(s)....in a box?

Off to a doctors appointment. The doc heard a murmur when he checked our littlest last month and we are seeing the pediatric cardiologist today to find out if it is harmless or not.
