Are you going to keep them? I would love to get eggs from you eventually.

We'll see what hatches and who requests what when they are young. I love Leghorns, will be a challenge not to keep at least a few of them. The LB eggs are Light Brahma, which are nice birds but not what I'm after, and the Naked Necks I guess I'll see what happens, I know Mayah wanted some last year.

Hey Guys, I think I need a hug.
I just bought a large wire crate off craigslist for my new chicks, to move them around easier. The ad said that they were selling all their chicken stuff for meat birds because their kids had grown out of 4-H.

I got the cage and asked if they had any killing cones. That's reasonable right? The guys said no, they never had any killing cones. I asked how they killed them. He said...and I quote, " we just used big rocks".

I almost fell over. I couldn't get out of there fast enough.
OMG. How do I erase this from my minds eye?

Wow. That is awful.

That first silkie looks just like one we hatched. Have you grown one of those patterns out before? I'd love to see pics!

You mean the patterns on the non-Silkies? No, these are hatched from eggs I got from a woman in Westcliffe with a mixed Bantam flock that has Cochins, Mille Fleurs. Dutch, and D'Uccles, and I hatched more than 30 of them, so these are just representative of what is in the brooder. I have someone coming to look at a few Silkies tonight or tomorrow, if anyone here is interested send me a PM, I have so many right now I'm selling them for $3 each.

Such cute bantam mixes! I had to look up Dutch bantams, they are really pretty!!! Chick in the first picture could be a Gold Partridge Dutch Bantam cross, Feathersite has some pictures of the Dutch Bantam's as chicks.

I thought you said there were pics of some silkies you hatched with the mixed bantam. The chick in the 3rd and 4th pics looks just like one of the silkies we hatched from your eggs.

I just remembered a dream I had about killing a meat bird. It was strange! Then I had to process this huge snake. It almost made me puke because of the smell. What a strange dream!

I just candled Ashdoes eggs. 5 out of the 8 are developing. I threw 2 obvious duds out but kept a questionable one. The incubator has been doing well and is only fluctuating about .4deg. It is slowly climbing in temp but still in the safe range. I think I need to get some hair gel for my test egg. I have water in it now but it evaporates and I think the temp reading goes up as it does, but I think the temp in the bator is really staying the same.

I'll be darned, I haven't seen that pattern from my Silkies before so I just assumed it was one of the mixes - now I guess I'll hang onto one or two and see how they grow out, thanks for the heads up trsurself!

So, great news, my Ameraucanas that were lost for 4 days (Doc shipped Monday afternoon) showed up this morning, ALIVE! The male flew out of the box when I opened it at the PO thinking I would be taking pictures of dead or dying birds. A strong testament to the health and vigor of Doc's birds.

I know the first image that comes to mind is very gruesome, but maybe they just knocked the bird out quickly and perhaps that would be a better image? Don't know but sorry that you had to deal with all of the weirdness. Killing cones are great but you can use traffic cones the same way. I just cut the top of the cone down a bit so that it is the proper size. Works great, free and easy to clean.
