I keep stipic powder on hand. Quick stop is what it is called I think. Petsmart should have it. It works very well on bleeding wounds.

Quick stop is for exactly that...accidentally clipping nails too short and stopping the blood right away. It's a great immediate blood clotted! Yes, most pet stores should have it.

Agree, the Kwick Stop powder will help it cougulate, and stop bleeding fast, TSC should have it too. Seems quicks can bleed an unbeliveable amount of blood for such a small wound.

Congrats on the egss!!!! No eggs so far here today....... a few lay later in the day, so hoping for at least one!!! I moved my Bantams around, so they are on strike right now, not going to pick up this week with the next two days highs are forecasted to be in the low single digits for our area. Brrrrr.

Thanks all By the time I got back from TSC, the bleeding had stopped and a small scab had formed. Perhaps because he wasn't running all over the coop scratching and procreating

. I figured out why the blood was all over the opposite leg... He kept lifting the wounded foot up into his feathers. He's laying quiet and peaceful in the tote.

I bought the spray on Blu Kote as I didn't want him kicking and spraying it all over the house while I tried to apply it with a dauber (liquid dip and apply with a swab). The warnings that it stains are well worth heeding, I got some on my fingers! It also dries almost immediately after application.

I looked up the Kwik Stop and Pet Smart carries it. I'll get some next time I'm by there to add to my growing pet medical emergency kit.

@Latestarter - if they have Blu Kote at the Brighton TSC, will you let me know please? That's the same place I go to for all my chicken stuff but I haven't found any wound treatment/medication type stuff there yet. Of course, it could be that I just didn't look hard enough.

) When you enter the TSC, go to the left and 3/4 of the way down the isle on the left side there are 2 aisles with med supplies including an end cap with refrigerated meds like penicillin and such. It's the aisles after the dog/cat foods and such. They had the blu kote as well as several other "blue" powders/sprays/liquids etc. I also got a tube of antibiotic gel and some bag balm (for the roo combs/wattles over the next few really cold days to help prevent frost bite/freeze damage).

Well, I guess it's time to bring the roo back out to join his pullets. I'll check on him again right before dark to make sure he isn't bleeding again. Thanks again all for the tips/pointers! Appreciated!

How often do you need to reapply it and can I put it on an already frostbite damaged comb?

Poor little Salt got frostbite on the tips of her comb during that November cold snap. I don't want her to get any worse. It is not bad now but with the cold coming on fast I don't want her to suffer.

Nice on the fodder trays!  Do you just put them in there after soaking???  Curious to know how to grow it indoors during the winter.  I had considered takinng some grass hay and putting it in a bucket to soften it, wondered if the chickens would even eat it???  They peck at it in the hay barn.

Well from what I have read about fodder, there are so many ways to do it, the soaking (various times depending on the grain/seed as well)is done to the grains, most are done in the dark to until germination begins, then you dump them into some sort tray/bucket/bin method you want. Grown for various lengths depending on your and your flocks preference and again dependent on the type of fodder. I am finishing my reading tonight and going to shoot for getting things going tomorrow evening.

Suncatcher, Mr. Lavender was hatched in May. I think he will get more attitude as he gets older. AMs mature slow, especially the males. I have 2 more cockerels from his hatch and they are not asserting themselves in my flock yet at all either. Even my AMs that are not dominant in the coop, seem to get the job done with they are put with the hens I want to breed them with. My older Lavender rooster is not at all dominant, but I have several young ones from him.

Hey 21hens: During the November arctic blast I was using a mixture of triple antibiotic and Vaseline... By the time I applied it, the damage was already done (1st winter w/chickens, didn't know) and several of my roos no longer have points on their combs... So, yes, I applied even after the damage was done to help heal and prevent additional damage. The buff orps took the worst hit with the black australorps second. There was minor damage to the Delaware and New Hampshire roos as well. There was no further damage or increase after I started applying it. The way I figure it, it has to be a petroleum (oil/grease) based product that will repel moisture... a water based product would not work and could actually do more damage as it too would freeze.

When I shared on here what I was doing and asked for other recommendations, someone stated that bag balm works as well and is soothing to them as a side benefit.

I apply it in the late afternoon daily, before they go to roost, when the temps at night are below zero. I also apply it to their wattles (they got a bit of bite as well on the bottoms). I expect it could be applied to hens as well if they have large(r) combs and/or wattles to help keep them from freezing also.

Have you tried using this product with poultry? I don't have chickens yet, but when it is cold outside I use this on my dogs paws, noses, and the thin skin on their ears. It's made for sled dogs to prevent frostbite. It's totally non toxic, all natural oils, and doesn't stain carpets or flooring. It's honestly one of the few products that I always have on hand. It's great for protecting foot pads against hot asphalt too. I bet it would work wonders to prevent frostbite with chickens. It's available at some pet stores, and really inexpensive on Amazon.com

We went to visit friends in grand junction and came back when it started to snow after Christmas.

Yesterday we cleaned out all the coops and put in fresh straw and put the poop straw over some brush as we start the hugelculture project in the backyard. I got a new sprayer yesterday to spray bokashi/em1 soon. I don't think my bunny Grace took to her pregnancy again.

Yesterday was only a 1 egg day. We got rid of the bed in the spare room we're turning into my incubation/hatching/early brooder area. I only plan on hatching eggs that will be olive eggers until the ayam cemani and white bresse start laying well. Of course the day we left was a 5 egg day, now down to 1. I may end up caving and buying svart honas or white bresse hatching eggs. Please stop me lol.

The muscovies went over to the cemani / bresse pen area to get out of the snow this morning. I'm needing to sprout some boss for my flocks, but we started a bunch of pepper seeds yesterday. Then I proceeded to crush an entire ghost pepper on my dinner rendering it inedible then got cross contamination of hotness on EVERYTHING and it still is burning me. No joke.

My bf has today off, I'm letting him sleep in. Then off to get more stuff for the garden. Now I appreciate my indoor growing endevors even more. My meyer lemons are doing great inside!

Holy smokes, you have a/some ayam cemani? I just discovered that breed about 20mins ago on a different thread and have been flipping out over how metal/goth they look! I feel like that was the chicken made for me! LOL (my planned coop is going to be a fake Victorian looking facade painted all black).

Are you breeding them to sell eggs/chicks by any chance?
