Out of curiosity, does anyone know of any place in Colorado that sells sexed ducklings or even older ducks? I'm not opposed to ordering from a hatchery to ship under normal circumstances, but I'd like to support local if I can and we need just a few more ladies. I'd like to avoid having to pay a $50 small order fee too if I can help it from a hatchery since I don't need 10-15 more, just a few.

Question for all of the experienced chicken keepers in Colorado since this is my first time owning chickens in CO
When did you start cutting the heat lamp at night for your chicks? Its still getting to like 30-40 degrees at night and I dont want to mess up their cold tolerance but I am also unsure when to cut the heat. Is it just when they are fully feathered? Im also worried about the gap in our shed (coop)s door and if that will impact how cold it is and if we should fix that before we cut the heatlamp?

We are about 1.5 hrs SW of Pueblo at almost 8500 ft elevation (so colder weather than your area). I don't use a heat lamp. Instead I use a mamma heating pad and brood in the coop. I got chicks when they were 2 weeks old (had heat during this time.). Once at my house, they had the mamma heating pad for another two weeks. Since then, they have had no heat source. They are now 7 weeks old and doing great. Starting this week, I've been letting them out of the brooder so they can start integrating with the hens in the run. Today the chicks were confined to the brooder as it was snowing here.

So you completely cut them off heat at 7 weeks and they were fine? Ok well Im way overdue then haha. Do you think if I cut ours off heat now they'll be fine?

Yes I did and yes, they are fine. But to be clear, a mamma heat pad provides a different kind of heated environment than a heat lamp does. Assuming your chicks are several weeks older than mine, they should be feathered...I'd take the plunge, and cut the heat.

bummer im on the western slope
