Colorado

Welcome to our new Colorado BYCers! I am personally biased toward bantam cochins & silkies

but I baby them....
For cold hardy birds....Alpine would sure know. We're at about 5400 ft on Front Range. Pea comb birds do well avoiding frostbite though having a well ventilated & insulated coop will go along way in caring for many breeds. I've had good luck with Easter Eggers (can be flighty from hatcheries), Speckled Sussex (real mellow & beautiful color).

I am really surprised to see how many people are on here from Canon and Penrose. I am just right down the road.

@ JodyJo

I have EE's and some are pretty docile and I have a few that freak if I even get close to them. They are good layers and I haven't had a problem with them in the cold. We got to -23 one night here and have had over a week of below zero at night and then it only got in the single digits during the days. They did just fine as did all my birds. I have a light in their coop but not sure how much heat it really puts off. I think as long as you have several that can cuddle up together they are fine. I also have a Cuckoo Maran and she is one of my favorite birds. She will let me pick her up and pet her. Love the dark brown eggs although she has stopped laying for some reason and I am pretty sure it is the bitter cold. Hope you enjoy your venture into Chicken Madness!!! I will give you fair warning now that it is very addicting. Chickens are like Lay's potato chips!! Noone can have just one!!!!!

Nice to see you on here! I sure wish our chicks were coming in Feb. instead of March cause I am excited to see them! But on the other hand I am glad it will hopefully be warmer when they come so they all make it!
