Colorado

Northern Colorado got slammed! We had 6" on the ground an hour ago and it's still coming down! School's been canceled. The coop is 32* and 50% humidity. The coop is buried (which is probably insulating it to some degree) and I haven't dug them out yet. I figure the temp is tolerable and they wouldn't want to come out in this anyways so I'll just leave them alone for a while. I'm going to send my 12 year old out to shovel soon, though, because I will feel better once I lay eyes on them! Hubby is a truck driver and on his way back to Denver after driving up north in this all night (in Wyoming). We lost a tree due to the weight of the snow and another tree has branches sagging at least 2'! It must be a very wet snow! The dog LOVES the snow, though, and romped around in it. He's about 3' tall and it comes up to his elbows! LOL He checked on the chickens like he does every morning and doesn't seem worried about them. I can't believe this storm in October!! I wonder if it's going to be a particularly snowy winter this year.....

The snow makes the ranch look beautiful. The animals may disagree. Me, I live for it. Snow is so much fun

That's the issue with Colorado, though, isnt it? We never know what may come of our weather. October storms arent rare. It's still considered a transition month, and transition means two forces duking it out until winter finally wins...so again, October snow, though weird, isn't all that rare. I hope we do get a far bit of snow this winter. Snow is still moisture and our ranchers, gardens and reservoirs need whatever they can get. Also, my well would like some more water, too!

We are still about 8 inches here....was hoping for 10 plus when I woke up. Still snowing moderately here in Parker.

No trees lost here. We already had six inches of snow two weekends ago! So the trees seem fine this time around.

*whispering* I do too but don't tell my wife. She hates snow but why? She doesn't shovel it, drive in it or has to deal with it at all!

Snow turns me into a kid.

We maybe have 5 inches here and it's still coming down. And yes thank goodness the wind isn't blowing too bad, just a smidge right now. I just came in from the barn. The girls are all staying in, the ducks and geese are out running around not sure what to think about their first snow, and the 2 piggets are rooting around looking for food like usual. Hasn't fazed them at all. "Just show me da food" is their war cry. I just hate the cold and snow because right now there is no electricity in the barn and I'll need to do water checks every couple of hours. There is a spicket in there though so I don't have to trek water out to them thank God.

Okay everyone stay cozy!!

Yeah water is tricky. I tossed an aquarium heater into my chickens bucket...it has worked thus far and was even warm to the touch when I went out this morning. I have to run a really long cord to the coop, but it works!

WooHoo! It finally started coming down in levels where it's impossible too see 100 feet. Be careful Colorado folks, it's heavy and may take out some power lines.

You might want to get a water tank heater, rather than an aquarium heater...the aquarium heater can melt the bucket if you aren't careful. A just get one that floats and it won't touch the sides or bottom and melt it.

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually cycle the heater and the bucket is metal. It will turn on for a half hour after an hour. So it never gets a chance to get too warm...plus it's shatter proof!
