Hey Janelle, we are doing the same thing with our run, and the staples just didn't work. We went to Big R, like TSC and got U-Shaped nails. There are really thick ones, and then thin ones. The thin ones went in perfect, and are holding the wire very well.
Good luck!

Ah-ha! That sounds like a great idea! I'm going to the hardware store (my second home) again today and I'll look for these while I'm there. Thank you!

Hey guys, I haven't been on the forums in ages but I wanted to show off my latest coop improvement. I travel a lot and so I use PVC pipe feeders to extend the time I can be away from the coop. However, in order to keep the feed dry in the rare chance it will ever rain again, I felt it necessary to keep the feeders inside the coop. This made it difficult to refill them as I had to crawl and twist and do no less than the seven basic ballet movements to get the feeders out to refill them and then return them to the coop. Well I had enough and while I was adding a third pipe feeder, it dawned on me! Cut a hole in the coop floor, slide the pipes through, and cap the tops so mice are kept out. Check it out!

This method raised the feeders, too, which had the unintended benefit of placing the food at a better height for the birds and I've noticed a huge decrease in waste. Score.

I also added an outside access nest box, three total, to the coop. I never had to crawl into the coop to gather eggs but the original nest box episode awkward and currently occupied by a broody hen. The girls wasted no time moving in!

So my coop is ugly as sin. Originally, it was a scale model of my own house, but has since taken on so many mods that it doesn't look much like itself. With the auto door and it's now new "eve" to protect it from the sun and the wind and the hail, as well as the solar panel that powers it, to the new nest box and the latest self-filling water bucket, it looks more like some mad experiment.

It's raining at Peterson AFB! I can't tell, is it or has it rained on the mountain? Wish it would rain for hours...it's just too dry.

Such a cool idea....

No thunder stolen... just made it louder!

Great coop. Cute factor is much greater on yours. Mine is ... utilitarian at best.

Wondering if I should have made mine more "permanent" like yours. Mine is modular. 3 Pieces that are "floating" on the ground. If I ever need to I could move it to a new house. In retrospect though, I had such a blast building this one I'd probably just start over if I ever move.

Got all the hardware on today and made the ramp...It's all done but putting in the chicks tomorrow.

Next project is a dust bowl (or square as it may be). Do pullets take dust baths or just mature hens?

This is the most fun I have had since I spent a year traveling around in Central America in my early twenties...

And...

Went into Agri-Feed today to buy a feeder and chick starter. I was honestly surprised and pleased with how helpful they were. I figured they would be like "here we go again, another backyard farmer", but they were great. They did look at me a bit sideways when I dropped the organic feed on the counter, old school, new school... there are many ways to do this ; )

So this is a plug for them. If you need feed or supplies I'd check them out (right here in Colorado Springs).

and the old guy who rang me up (in his 70's ?) said dust from wood shavings is hogwash.... for what it's worth. Thoughts on that?

Well, I just watched one of the EE chicks take a dust bath this morning! LOL 5 days old and already dust bathing.....:) Your coop/run is MUCH nicer than mine. Mine is functional at best. LOL

These chicks are pigs and do not.stop.eating! They have food alllll over the floor but don't want to eat it off of there! I need a better feeding idea because I think most of the food is being wasted!

They are so crazy friendly, I can't believe it! I haven't given them any treats or food out my hands yet they still RUN to me when I put my hand in the brooder. :)

Quote: Mommato5, I put my little chick feeder like yours in a pie tin and then set it up on bricks or wood or something about chest high to the chicks. They grow fast so I am always changing things around. It does cut down on feed loss.

I have mixed feelings on Agri-Feed. They have good prices and are very polite, but when I asked what they had to worm my girls they sold me pig swig. I found out after I got home that that stuff is only good for 'large round worms'. So, polite, but not too understanding of small flock owners wanting superior care. It was more of a "they're just chickens" attitude.

Ryan- LOVE the feeders. Wish I could modify them into my coop. *envious look*
