I use all purpose sand. Love it!

With the chicks I just hatched, I put a thin layer of sand, pdz mixture down in their brooder. So far, I suspect they like it and it makes the spare room that much cleaner and the smell is way, way down. The all purpose sand is a little bigger grain, correct? I'm going to try that next then as I suspect it will be even less dustier than the children's play sand.

Sorry Wendell.

On another topic... anyone use Sweet PDZ? Curious as to thoughts on why or why not?

Going to go buy a bag of DE tomorrow after work.

i use sweet pdz powder in part of my coop. It makes clean up easier.
I've just started mixing it in with some sand in the run and i'm not sure i like the powder version in there. I'm going to switch to the granule for in the run. So far the sand/pdz mix is really helping with the smell in there. I have kids play sand in there only because home depot was out of the all purpose sand when i went there and i didn't have time to make another trip later.

Well the squatty pullet didn't make it. Mayah was going to take her, but while she was here, the pullet started drooling and acting very lethargic. We separated her from the rest, and by time we got back out to cull her she had died. Her spine was not growing, and her insides were. Didn't work out for her.
so sorry.

Dorkings arrived Friday!!!!

My big rooster sings an egg song when I scare him. :) .

I went to the link too bc I didn't know what an egg song was-and said the SAME thing! If my little rooster gets scared he makes the same sound! He's a d'uccle.
My d'uccle pullet doesn't make that sound at all when she lays her egg. I wouldn't even know how to describe her egg song! Just that it's LOUD! Lol

Sorry Wendell.

I use it when I add more shavings. I used to use it when I had horses and always liked it. I think it cuts down on any smells, my coop doesn't get stinky but it just takes away the slight chicken smell.

On Saturday as previously posted, I got the nest boxes built for the big hen house. That evening, I went back out and built the large long roost. no photos yet. It is about 36 inches above the top of the foundation, which we still need to fill in with dirt and bedding when the time comes;and has three 2 x 4s, just under 12 feet long.

We also took some time and banded all the birds, (except the pullet who died yesterday, and the turkeys). Then we did a preliminary flock assessment. We still need to drop 2 Dom pullets and 1 Dom cockerel from the final flock, but that will give us 6 dominique pullets and 3 or 4 EE pullets left over (there is one that I think is a Cockerel, and Beth thinks is a Pullet). From those, 2 Dom pullets will go to Rock Ledge Ranch, and 2 Dom and 2 EE pulets for Sharon. So after those 6 go away, we will have 2 Dominique pullets, 2 Dominique Cockerels (good breeder line) and one or two EE pullets available should anyone want one. The Dom and EE pullets will be $5.00 each, the Dominique cockerels will be $10.00 each to local BYC people, u-pick-up. One of the Dominique cockerels has a slight wry comb, which is of no concern if you are not going to breed to APA standard. If they are not purchased, they will eventually go to the freezer for my family. Let me know if any of you are interested in the left-over birds.

This afternoon if the weather cooperates, I plan on putting in the remaining roost in the hen house.
