Colored eggs

It's a shame really, that many wild traits get lost because they are not as productive as European lines(Hence they are outcross to them in hopes to increase productivity)

It truly is a shame. I wouldn't mind having some of these birds. We are a family of 2 and simply cannot eat eggs everyday. Low production is not a problem for me. I just like having chickens. I wonder how well they would do in Wisconsin.

There used to be some easter egg chickens that laid eggs that were pastel colors including lavender, orange, yellow, blue, green, pink, and more. Now, the hatcheries are getting colored eggs from sources that breed for bright blue only. Where can someone find those chickens with the eggs in so many pastel colors?

Thank you for the article, nicalandia, extremely interesting! It looks like someone needs to go to the highlands of Peru and Chile or Indonesia to see if they can find chickens that lay those color eggs. I'm sure there would be a market for those chickens. The fact that they came from Easter Island at some point makes the Easter Egger name make a who lot of sense. I always wondered where the Easter Egger name came from and thought it was because Easter was associated with pastel colors but what the article says makes more sense.

we've bought EE from the same small hatchery for 3 years. Each year the eggs are from blue to green to olive to grey, and various shades in between. It will likely depend on the mix of parentage.

if you are willing to search, then look for farms or smaller hatcheries in your area as they may give you more variety. In general, blue eggs are sought after so the larger hatcheries have responded with more blue layers.

When I first heard about "easter eggers" I was told they can lay a rainbow of eggs (one colour per hen of course) which sounded like a dream come true! but now if they lay anything other than blue or bluish green I see a lot of people getting disappointed and even hatcheries are saying there is a "risk" of non blue eggs. I'm going to assume that since blue/green is so popular breeders and hatcheries are trying their best to breed away from the assortment of possible colours for more blues?

Although these don't come from EE you would typically buy, I have been working on getting a flock that lays a variety of colours, from pink (thanks to the bloom) to some which can be classed as orange to some. this is what I picture when I think "easter eggers"
