coloring chicks?

I tried to dye my cat red for Halloween one year. I wanted her to be "roadkill". I used food coloring, but she only turned an odd pink color. I think that bathroom still has pink splatters on the walls. (Have you ever tried to give a cat a bath in food coloring?)

I believe Ideal Hatchery said they dip theirs in food coloring. I didn't think the dye while in the egg technique was common anymore.
I recently dyed my dog with food coloring. I would drip a few drops before brushing it in, so I didn't have to worry about a mess. He was very cute, but people kept asking how much alcohol was involved when I dyed him, and I never drink!
