not sure if this is the right forum. Is it just me or do the combs and waddles change brightness with mood?? Sometimes it’s bright red sometimes not.

Yes,my birds are usually pale when relaxing, or when they are not laying or if their molting.Usually Red when showing aggression or laying eggs.

Are you talking about mature laying hens or pullets before onset of lay?
Most mature hens in lay stay bright red all the time.
Pullets can drive you nuts with the brightening(you think they are going to lay the next day) then an hour later go pale again...that is just exertion and relaxation.
